FAMILY OF FISH - SARDINES

Canned fish is undoubtedly a packaging icon. With long traditions of stunning canned fish in Spain, France, and Portugal, the fish tin has maintained its elegance for over a century. Now, Family of Fish pays homage to the rich history of European tin design while adding a contemporary flair.

PROCESS
Unorthodox, this packaging is sure to grab someone's attention. Derived from a sketch of a sardine on a shipping box found somewhere in the depths of google images, this fish represents the journey through history that sardines have taken. This tin pays homage to all the elegant and traditional sardines that have come before with a twist.

There were two parts to the process; creating a traditional base and drawing the sharpie marker fish. The tin began to get filled quickly with basic information such as flavor, net weight, multiple languages, secondary ingredients, location of the company, and the name Family of Fish. The type is simple and takes inspiration from vintage Italian drop shadows to reinforce the company's ties to history. I added some linework illustrations to the center, chose vintage colors, and BAM, a classic traditional sardine tin. Next, I went to work drawing fish. Warn dry markers would work best and look transparent, not fully covering all the can information. The sardine drawing is placed in the middle of the tin, covering some not-so-important information that somebody can find elsewhere. While this project may be strange or confusing to encounter at the grocery, it is a unique concept that will stand out. With all the beautifully designed sardine cans designed throughout history, I am happy to be able to add my contemporary version that shows respect to the past and present.

On the right, you can see my pages filled with sardines. I found that the more warn and dry the marker, the lighter the marks and the more transparent it will look on the can. I must have drawn about 100 fish and plenty of pages of the words "BRINE," "OLIVE OIL," and "TOMATOES" as well to get the right ones.
