DUBROSKY GAZETTE

For this project, I wanted to create a document that pushes the boundaries while also showcasing refined and elegant typography. Measuring 36x28 inches when opened, this unconventionally sized paper uses unique compositions built from justified type, bold headlines, photo collage, and illustration. In order to fill space and add content, this gazette focuses on personal interests, stories, interviews, and anecdotes. The ultimate goal was to create a document that blurs the line between fine art and graphic design while maintaining its functionality.

This process taught me a lot about typography, print design history, and the reasoning behind the newspaper aesthetic. Creating content, allowing function, balancing compositions, setting type, choosing fonts, pairing Illustrations, sizing, and printing were all challenges that I had to overcome and reevaluate continuously throughout its development. The process opened my eyes to the many details of a large-scale publication and the countless moving parts that all come together to create a functional and beautiful newspaper.

I found my solutions for this project in its content. I let headlines look like what they were saying. I leaned into the scale by putting something really big next to something really small. I began to fall in love with the texture of 9pt body copy. I spent long nights writing and rambling and going off on tangent after tangent. I utilized the power of negative space and visual humor to find meaning in my compositions. I sourced graphics, collaged images, and illustrated spots to fill the missing pieces. I wrote 17,049 words, and I puzzled them all together.
